Graduate Employment-----KTP

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships involve graduates being KTP Associates working in companies managing challenging projects with academic input.

A KTP project is a three-way partnership between a company, which has a specific and strategic project, a Knowledge Base (university of college) and a graduate (minimum qualification NVQ level four) who works in the company on the project, whilst being supported by the Knowledge Base. Projects last from one to three years.

KTP works with all the leading universities across the UK, and last year, over 1,000 graduates were involved with KTP.
AREAS OF INDUSTRYThere are around 400 vacancies this year and KTP works across a wide range of academic disciplines and industry sectors. So it might be that you’re planning marketing communications for a leading media agency, researching the latest engineering techniques for an environmental company, or undertaking geodemographic profiling for the NHS. The opportunities are huge and changing all the time.
TRAININGAll graduates get to spend around 10% of their time in training and personal development, which could include courses on leadership and negotiation, financial management or company-based technical training. All graduates are required to participate in the KTP Associate Development Course. This aims to equip you with the understanding of KTP, the management and business skills needed to manage your projects and subsequent career effectively. In addition, the course provides guided learning towards the achievement of the Diploma in Management (Level 5). In addition, you are allocated a dedicated KTP Adviser who will provide you with coaching and mentoring in support of becoming a competent manager and in particular in achieving the Diploma in Management qualification.

Many graduates go on to continue their studies further during the KTP.  In 2006/2007, 21% registered for post-graduate qualifications and in addition, 50 recruits holding higher degrees registered for further post-graduate work.
BENEFITSThe essential benefit of KTP is that it allows graduates the opportunity to start work at a managerial level. The whole premise of a KTP is that the company needs someone to manage a specific, strategic project, so from the outset graduates are tasked with delivery. Although that might sound daunting, remember you’ve got a dedicated University Supervisor and a KTP Adviser, ready to help and advise whenever you need. Graduates also benefit from a local KTP Office and regional/national KTP management. There are also about 400 other graduates in the same position as you – so there’s a real sense of community.
WHO SHOULD APPLY?If you want to apply your degree, start a ‘real’ job straight away and gain a professional qualification, then KTP is what you’re looking for. You should be inquisitive, bright and serious about getting ahead. Only the most able graduates need apply.
HOW TO GET INVOLVEDGiven the wide range of KTP projects available, all degree subjects are considered. KTP has around 400 vacancies across the UK, and recruitment takes place all year round. Vacancies are advertised on the website www.ktponline.org.uk. Applicants will be interviewed by the University involved in the KTP and you can expect two stages of interview.
