PhD position Quantitative Psychology or Statistics

PhD position Quantitative Psychology or Statistics
At the Department of Statistics and Data Analysis (Faculty of Behavioral and Social Sciences, University of Groningen) is a PhD position available in the area of psychometrics and statistics for the PhD project entitled 'The Incremental Value of Item Respons Theory to Personality Assessment'. Personality assessment is an important part of the professional activity of numerous research, clinical, and industrial psychologists. Clinicians are interested in measuring constructs as depression and anxiety, and industrial psychologists in constructs as conscientiousness and emotional stability. Both use their questionnaires to predict outcomes, such as increased risk of illness or job performance. In the field of personality assessment, scale construction and revision rely heavily on classical test theory and factor analytic methods. In contrast, in educational and cognitive ability assessment, item response theory (IRT) modeling has rapidly become the theoretical basis during the last decades. IRT is also promising to improve scale construction in personality assessment. However, applying IRT to personality data instead of educational or cognitive data is not simply applying IRT to a different type of dataset, because there are several systematic features of personality scales that warrant attention. The aim of this project is twofold: first, to study model fit in the personality domain, that is, to explore which IRT models are most suited to describe the data structure of some major personality inventories, and which factors determine the fit/misfit of an IRT model; Second, to study impact, that is, to investigate empirically whether IRT modeling can indeed improve classification decisions in the personality domain.
